Cheating in long distance relationships

When you are betrayed by a loved one, it can turn out to be one of the most hurtful experiences of your life – especially if you find out that your partner has been cheating on you, you feel crestfallen and shattered, rightly so. But can this experience also be transformative? What could be the aid for heartbreak? It begins with processing what you’ve been through and acknowledging the hurt that has been caused. Cheating can make you question your own self, it can make you insecure, take a toll on your mental health and your confidence levels may also come down. So it is vital that you focus on yourself and understand that cheating is not a consequence of your shortcomings. Whose fault was it? Most of the time people cheat and lie to others when they are extremely unhappy with who they are not because they intend to hurt you. It is their insecurities and fears that make them act this way and not something you have done or said. Acknowledge your feeling of hurt, it is valid; speak about it to someone who cares about you, it deserves to be heard; practice mindfulness or meditation, move your body by dancing, exercising, going for walks; meet a friend, treat yourself to something you really like; eat nutritious food made with love. It is important to restore your nervous system from the trauma of betrayal. This is a priority and you owe it to yourself. Understand that the blame game will only momentarily alleviate the symptoms, but it’s not the cure to your pain. Empathy towards your ex-partner’s weakness and towards your pain is a much deeper, healthier and long lasting healer than momentary impulsiveness. It will also make you both better human beings overall. Was the risk worth it? If you focus on your pain right now, maybe not. If you are healthy and didn’t catch COVID from your trip, think about what this experience has taught you about yourself and life. Any lesson learnt is a golden nugget towards our path of self-awareness. If there is still some void left then you may want to consider getting counseled by a professional who deals with relationship problems, breakups and heartbreak. There are also some couples who wish to give a chance to their relationship even after such experiences and for such partners, who wish to rebuild their equation, Relationship Counselling can be of great help.
